Natural determinants of agricultural land efficiency: The total area of the Arab States is approximately 4.1 billion hectares. Arable land is estimated at 197 million hectares, of which 5.36% is exploited. Rain-fed agriculture is most prevalent in the Arab States, accounting for about 57 percent of seasonal cultivated area, compared to 15 percent of irrigated agricultural land and 28 percent of unexploited land. Over the past two decades, the area cultivated in the Arab States has grown modestly, from around 3.3% in the early 1990s to 9.4% in 2007. Since the early 1990s, the proportion of irrigated land relative to the total cultivated area has stabilized at around 15%. The average annual growth rate of cultivated area during the reporting period was approximately 5.1%, while the annual growth rate of population during the same period was approximately 9.2%. . This resulted in a decrease in the average cultivated area per capita, from 3.0 hectares in the early 1990s to 2.0 hectares in 2007.
